Ft. Stewart shooting: 5 injured soldiers expected to survive, shooter ID’d

FORT STEWART, Ga. — The suspect accused of shooting and wounding five soldiers on Wednesday morning at Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield has been identified as a fellow soldier.

Brig. Gen. John Lubas identified the suspect as Sgt. Quornelius Radford, 28, during a news conference.

Channel 2 Action News’ sister station, WJAX, confirmed that Radford is from the Jacksonville, Fla. area.

Five soldiers were shot and are expected to make full recoveries. Three of those soldiers required surgery. Two of them have been transferred to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah.

Officials say Radford did not use a military weapon, and they are investigating how he got a personal handgun onto the post.

Other soldiers saw the shooting and immediately tackled Radford, Brig. Gen. Lubas said.

“All soldiers were treated on-site and moved to Winn Army Community Hospital for further treatment,” they said. “There is no active threat to the community.”

The 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area was locked down at 11:04 a.m. and law enforcement responded to the scene. An all clear was given a few hours later.

None of the victims’ identities have been released.

Radford was also arrested locally for a DUI, Lubas confirmed, but his chain of command was unaware of that.

According to court documents obtained by Channel 2 Action News, Radford was arrested on May 18 and charged with DUI and running a red light in Liberty County. He was granted an $1,818 bond and released.
