WARE COUNTY, Ga. — Two teenagers have been struck by lightning and killed, according to the National Weather Service.
The NWS confirmed to Channel 2 Action News’ sister station Action News Jax that an 18-year-old and 19-year-old were struck and killed in Waresboro on Thursday night.
Waycross, Georgia Mayor Dr. Michael-Angelo James identified the teens as Joey Nelson and Randall Martin III.

“Both [were] beloved members of the Ware County Gators football team. Their dedication, sportsmanship, and energetic spirits left an indelible mark on their teammates, coaches, and the entire Waycross community. Joey was also the grandnephew of our City Clerk, Mrs. Jacqualine Powell,” the mayor wrote in a statement.
NWS Jacksonville said it happened in an open field near a vehicle during a thunderstorm.
The city plans to coordinate with Ware County Schools on memorial events.
