JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — Three people were injured in a shooting on a high school campus in Colorado on Wednesday.

The suspect, a boy who opened fire with a handgun, also was hurt when he shot and hurt himself, officials said.

ABC News reported three patients were in critical condition and were taken to a hospital, according to a spokesperson, and a fourth student was taken to the hospital with an unknown injury.

By early evening, one teen was in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries, said Dr. Brian Blackwood, the hospital’s trauma director.

The shooting happened around midday at Evergreen High School, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Jacki Kelley said.

All those taken to the hospital are believed to be students, Kelley said, but she couldn’t confirm ages or genders of the students.

Shots were fired both inside and outside the school building, she said. Law enforcement officers found the shooter within five minutes of arriving, but they fired no shots, she said.

The injured teens were either in the emergency room or undergoing surgery as of mid-afternoon at St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood, Colorado, CEO Kevin Cullinan said. He said he does not believe there were any other victims from the shooting.

The FBI Denver office said in a statement that is has personnel responding to assist.

More than 100 police officers from around the Denver area rushed to the school to try to help, Kelley said. The sheriff’s office is the same agency that responded to the school shooting at the 1999 Columbine High School shooting that killed 14 people, including a woman who died earlier this year of complications from her injuries in the shooting.

Evergreen, Colorado, is a community of less than 9,000 people located just west of the Denver metro area.

The Associated Press contributed to the report.
