3-month-old dies in metro Atlanta; police say his father waited days to call 911

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. — A father has been charged with murder after his 3-month-old son was found “unresponsive” and “foaming at the mouth” inside a motel room in College Park.

Jerry Charles Chambers, Jr. 21, of Virginia, was arrested and charged with murder and cruelty to children, according to jail records. As of Wednesday, Chambers had not retained a lawyer.

It was around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday when officers responded to Travelodge on Old National Parkway and discovered the baby’s body.

Right now, it’s unclear how the child died. Channel 2′s Michael Seiden obtained arrest warrants that revealed what unfolded during the two days leading up to his arrest.

During an interview with police, Chambers told investigators that he left his son alone in the room Sunday while he went to work. When he came back, he told police he tried to save his son’s life.

“When he returned to his room, his son was unresponsive and foaming at the mouth,” a detective wrote in the arrest affidavit. “He attempted to resuscitate (him), but he remained unresponsive.”

Instead of calling 911, police say, Chambers left the hotel and went to another hotel with a friend.

“He then came back to the location (motel) and packed a bag with (child) still unresponsive,” the officer wrote in the arrest affidavit.

Arrest warrants accuse Chambers of staying the night with a friend while his child remained alone in the motel room. The following morning he returned to the room and then left for work, police said.

Investigators say Chambers called 911 after he returned from work on Tuesday afternoon.

Channel 2 reached out to College Park police for more details, but our calls haven’t been returned.

On Wednesday, Seiden spoke exclusively with a motel employee about the investigation.

“It’s really sad,” said the employee, who asked us not to identify him, citing the ongoing investigation. “Sometimes he would come up with a baby in hands, but I never saw his girl.”

The employee said that Chambers, who had been living at the motel since the summer, was quiet and kept to himself.

Channel 2 was there Wednesday as investigators returned to the motel, where an employee confirmed that detectives were continuing to review surveillance videos. It’s unclear if anyone else will face charges.
