Man guarding Atlanta apartment with shooting victim inside shot, killed by civilian

ATLANTA — Two people were shot at an apartment community early Saturday morning, police confirmed.

Officers were called to Alison Court just after 7:30 a.m. where they found a man standing in front of the apartment with a rifle and a handgun. The man ran off before police could speak with him.

Moments later, police say they heard several gunshots and found the armed man dead.

Investigators told Channel 2’s Bryan Mims that it appears the armed man was confronted and shot by another civilian man.

The other victim went to Grady Memorial Hospital, where Atlanta Police Department Homicide Commander Lt. Andrew Smith said he is currently stable.

A dispute led to the initial gunfire, but it’s unclear what started the argument, Smith said.

“We believe that there might be alcohol and drugs involved,” he said.

Police detained one person for questioning, but no charges had been filed as of noon Saturday.

Officers blocked Alison Court outside the complex for hours as officers combed the area. Smith said police found three weapons outside the apartment.

Family members of the man killed gathered along the sidewalk, comforting each other. They declined to speak on camera.

“We don’t believe he lived there permanently,” Smith said. “It was an off and on situation from what we know, possibly dating one of the residents there.”

Police have not released the names of the two men.
