ATLANTA — The Atlanta Police Department said a 7-year-old boy was shot in northwest Atlanta on Monday.

According to police, the victim child was “alert, conscious and breathing” when officers arrived and was rushed to a nearby hospital for a gunshot wound to the leg.

“The preliminary investigation indicates that the male may have gained access to an unsecured firearm inside of the home and accidentally shot himself while handling the firearm,” Atlanta police said in a statement Monday.
Officers said the investigation into this shooting continues and did not have any word on any possible charges at this point.
