Suspect arrested in connection with Ritz-Carlton SWAT situation

ATLANTA — The Atlanta Police Department said a suspect has been taken into custody Sunday in connection with a SWAT situation at the Ritz-Carlton on Peachtree Street.

Channel 2’s Cory James was at the scene for WSB Tonight at 11 p.m.

SWAT officers were called to the hotel, and the entire block was blocked off as crisis negotiators worked to get the suspect inside the hotel out.

SWAT team members, armored trucks and long rifles are what Marcus Lopez saw outside. He is staying at the hotel.

But a man held up inside kept Lopez from going past the yellow tape Sunday afternoon.

“It’s cold. I don’t know what we’re going to do for the next couple hours,” Lopez said.

Police earlier said “preliminary information indicates the male may be armed,” so they were securing the area out of an abundance of caution.

The standoff caused this massive police presence that shut down roads like Andrew Young International Blvd. and Ellis Street for hours.

But around 5:30 p.m., Atlanta police said the suspect had been taken into custody.

On the street near the hotel, a man visiting from Tampa got caught in the situation.

Prit Patel told James that he and a friend were helping someone move and went to go get a rental car when they “just saw a bunch of cop cars pull in here.”

Patel said that at first, he and his friends were confused, but saw that something “bad was going down.”

“Tampa isn’t the safest place at times either, but it’s kinda scary to think that at the Ritz, like knowing it’s very safe, higher-end,” Patel said.

James reached out to Mariott, which owns the Ritz-Carlton. So far, no response.

Channel 2 also checked to see if a weapon was recovered and are waiting to hear back.
