Broken mailboxes causing problems for tenants in NW Atlanta

ATLANTA — An Atlanta woman fears that broken mailboxes could end up costing her a new job because she can’t get her mail.

Tenants at Columbia Estates Apartments are being told to pick up their mail at the U.S. Post Office located on Marietta Street three miles away.

A spokesperson for the Postal Service said they are aware of the situation, but ultimately it’s the apartment complex that is responsible for making those repairs.

A spokesperson for the property said they are working on it.

Until that happens, they’ll have to make the trek to the post office, which has turned into a headache for some residents.

“I have lost so much because I’m not getting mail, and my job is in jeopardy because I’m waiting on some important documents from another state,” tenant Getta told Channel 2′s Michael Seiden. “It’s taxes. I need to get my tax information to do my taxes, and still, I need my mail.”

Getta showed Channel 2 how easily someone can steal her mail. The door to the mailbox freely swings open.

She said the problem started after someone vandalized the mailboxes.

Then, the mail just stopped coming, and now she and her neighbors are forced to drive three miles away to pick up it up.

A spokesperson for the USPS said in a statement:

“Currently, the condition of the mail receptacles does not allow for secure delivery of mail. Local postal management is working with the leasing office, which is responsible for the repair of the receptacles at this complex, to resolve this issue.”

A representative from Columbia Residential said:

“The property management team is aware that the master lock for the community mailboxes was vandalized, rendering it inoperable. The USPS has changed the standard for mailboxes and the footprint needed is larger than the previous boxes, so it is taking longer than expected for us to resolve the situation. (CHANGE) We have hired a vendor to install a new mailbox structure in accordance with the new USPS standards over the next few weeks. In the interim, we are working closely with the post office to ensure our residents are able to receive their mail.”
