ATLANTA — Parents have answers after waiting more than two hours for their children to arrive home from school Thursday.
“They’re tired. They’re thinking about homework. They’re thinking about quizzes. We have plans,” Neisha Asante told Channel 2’s Courtney Francisco. “What about if someone has to go take medication or go to the restroom?”
Her child is a student at Sutton Middle School. She said she acknowledged buses run late periodically in the city due to traffic or scheduling, but this time was different.
The bus did not show up on the parent GPS tracking app, and Atlanta PD got involved.
So, Channel 2 Action News reached out to Atlanta Public Schools to find out what went wrong this time.
The district said in a statement there was a driver scheduling issue, and it took time to replace the driver that normally covers that route.
Because it was a new bus and driver, the parents did not see the usual bus on the tracking app.
“I was quite disappointed and shocked that they did not sent out any type of formal communication,” said Asante.
Parents said police were involved because the bus was so late, when they contacted the district’s transportation office, it was closed.
“The after hours number forwarded us to Atlanta PD,” said Asante.
Atlanta Police Department said it does not get involved in transportation issues involving bus scheduling problems.
The district issued the following statement:
Due to a driver scheduling issue yesterday, the bus in question arrived to pick up students from Sutton Middle School’s seventh and eighth grade campus uncharacteristically late and did not appear on the district’s bus GPS system, Here Comes the Bus.
However, this issue has been resolved, and a permanent driver has been assigned to the route beginning on Monday to continue the consistent service that has been provided. Atlanta Public Schools parents with questions about buses and bus routes may call the Transportation Office, which is open until 7 p.m., Monday through Friday: 404-802-5500.
