CARROLLTON, Ga. — A fire broke out at an apartment complex in Carrollton early Wednesday morning, leaving several families without homes and causing minor injuries to three people.
The fire started around 4 a.m. at the Soma Apartments in Carrollton, affecting four apartments—two were damaged by flames, while the other two suffered smoke and water damage.
“It looked like someone took a gas can and poured it on my living room,” said Crystal Granados, a resident and mother of three, who was at home when the fire started.
“It broke my heart,” she said.
“I woke up to my fire alarm going off,” Granados said, describing how she quickly evacuated her children from the building.
Granados recounted the terrifying moments when she awoke from a nap on her couch to the sound of the fire alarm. She managed to get her children out safely but lost her two cats in the fire.
The Carrollton Fire Department responded quickly to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further. They are currently investigating the cause, which may have been electrical, according to initial insights shared with Granados.
Granados expressed gratitude for her family’s safety despite the loss of their pets. “I’m just so thankful me and my kids were able to get out in time,” she said. “My kids need clothes shoes anything anybody can donate, anything helps no matter how small."
The fire department is awaiting an assessment from the insurance company to evaluate the extent of the damage.
As the investigation into the fire’s cause continues, affected families are left to salvage what they can and begin the process of rebuilding their lives.
