GA mayor’s trial for deadly crash goes to jury

CARROLL COUNTY, Ga. — A jury heard closing arguments Tuesday in the trial for a former Georgia State Trooper and current mayor charged in a deadly crash.

Anthony “AJ” Scott is accused of causing a crash that killed 16-year-old Isabella Chinchilla and 17-year-old Kylie Lindsey in 2015. Scott, now the mayor of Buchanan, allegedly drove at speeds up to 90 mph without lights or sirens and crashed into the teens’ Nissan Sentra.

The jury is now in deliberation.

Kellie Lindsey, Kylie’s mother, has been in the courtroom throughout. She told Channel 2’s Candace McCowan that she wants this chapter to finally come to a close.

“I didn’t ever plan for it to be this long, and it has been horrific,” she said.

Court resumed Tuesday with prosecutors and defense attorneys presenting their closing arguments.

Prosecutors laid out the charges against Scott, including second-degree homicide by vehicle, reckless driving and speeding.

The defense argued that the collision was the fault of the teen driving the other car that was struck.

The driver, Dillon Wall, was only 18 years old at the time. He testified during the trial and is ready for an end.

“Moving forward, putting it in the past and trying to heal,” he said.

This is the second time Scott is being tried for the case. A judge declared a mistrial in 2019, saying the Carroll County prosecution withheld evidence. The DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office is now prosecuting the case.

Scott could face up to 30 years in prison if convicted.
