The decision to allow students and faculty to leave was made out of concern over unsafe driving conditions.

Most students who spoke to Channel 2 Action News said it was an appropriate move.

“It’s probably best to play it safe. This is the deep South, and we don’t do really well in the snow,” said student Rachel Sayles.

It was the second time in less than a month that the university, which hosts more than 37,000 students, canceled classes because of winter weather. Most campus operations were canceled when a winter storm moved into Georgia on Jan. 10.

“I think campus safety is of the utmost importance, especially UGA’S campus. I know they prioritize that, so I think that was the right decision,” said student Cole Faucheux.

Residential and dining halls will remain open and essential workers will remain on the job.

University officials said they would monitor weather conditions and provide an update Tuesday night or early Wednesday for campus classes and activities for Wednesday.
