Various groups use this building on weekends for athletic activities and other events.
The pastor of the church that owns the building, Dr. Paul Fortson, said the shooting had nothing to do with Saturday night’s basketball tournament.
“Our facility has done a lot of good in this community from our food pantries, from our toy giveaways, our school supply giveaways,” Fortson said.

Fortson said he got the call Saturday night about the gunfire.
Police say around 6:40 p.m., three people were shot as a basketball tournament was underway inside the gym.
He said the shooting happened not inside, but behind the building.
“No one who was involved in the incident had any association or affiliation with the tournament,” Fortson said.

He said the building was locked down until Forest Park police arrived. Investigators say a fight led to the shooting.
The pastor told Mims that one victim was treated on the scene and two others went to the hospital.
He said nothing violent has ever happened at the building, and good will continue to flow through its doors.
“I think situations like this, they do not mark ... they’re not the hallmark of the community. But it lets us be the spiritual, moral communal voice in the community, knowing how we can help,” Fortson said.
