Extremely busy air travel day complicated by Midwest weather

ATLANTA — The Transportation Security Administration says Sunday could break a record for its busiest travel day.

But winter weather is disrupting flights across the country, including at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

The Federal Aviation Administration said there are around 51,000 flights scheduled for Sunday. But winter weather in the Midwest and Great Lakes is causing an issue.

According to FlightAware, there were more than 1,200 cancelations and more than 26,000 delays Sunday.

Derrick Vaness was traveling from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to Chicago.

“We couldn’t find a flight, so we had to leave out of Atlanta, and now our flight is delayed,” Vaness told Channel 2’s Eryn Rogers.

Experts say this could be the busiest holiday travel season in the past 15 years.

“Everybody does Thanksgiving, you know, whereas Christmas is Christian and whatever, but everybody does Thanksgiving, so it’s the highest travel period for all the United States,” said aviation expert Tucker Balch.

The Atlanta airport says around 4 million people will pass through its terminals this Thanksgiving holiday season, even though Monday is supposed to be the busiest travel day in Atlanta given the holiday travelers mixed with business travelers heading back to work.

And experts say any delays or cancelations Sunday could make Monday even more hectic.
