Man who shot self at Atlanta airport faces charges, APD says

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — A man found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Sunday afternoon has been charged in connection with the shooting, Atlanta PD said.

In an update police released Sunday night, police identified the person who shot himself as 59-year-old Douglas E. Smith.

APD said they found him in the upper-level baggage claim area at about 3:34 p.m. with a gunshot wound to his left arm. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Airport operations were not affected by the shooting, police said.

Smith was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and reckless conduct.

He will be taken to jail following his release from the hospital, APD said.
