Police said they found a shotgun in Marcus Smith’s car after his arrest March 4. Officers told Channel 2 Cobb County Bureau Chief Michele Newell it started with a dispute between the suspect, his girlfriend and an employee at AniMart Pets.

The couple was kicked out of the store before gunshots were fired in the parking lot. Police responded and cleared the scene, but they were soon called back to the location when shots rang out again.

“Two times is a lot. It’s abnormal, so i was under the impression that they would 100% be back for a third time,” said Sgt. Alex Hayes with Austell police. “I had all officers shut off their lights and park like a normal vehicle in the parking lot.”

When Smith returned the final time, officers were able to safely arrest him.

According to a warrant, Smith fired six shots from a pistol near the business while people were around. Then police said he came back with a shotgun and fired into the air.

Police previously told Newell that Smith and his girlfriend were looking at reptiles inside the pet store before they got into the argument with an employee.
