The teachers, who work at Campbell Middle School, McEachern High School, and another middle school, are under investigation for their posts, which some found offensive.
Jeff Hubbard, president of the Cobb County Association of Educators, stated that unprofessional conduct on social media can lead to disciplinary actions, even if the posts are on personal accounts.
“Regardless of what you think about the gentleman who passed away, he still left a widow. He still left two children. It’s a tragic situation,” Hubbard told Channel 2 Cobb County Bureau Chief Michele Newell.
The Cobb County School District released a statement emphasizing that unprofessional conduct is not tolerated and that educators are expected to exercise sound judgment both in and outside the classroom.
Hubbard noted that in one case, a teacher’s private post was reported by someone at their own school.
In one post a teacher wrote “guess this was just the unfortunate result of protecting that oh so precious Second Amendment.”
The comment is written above a post that the teacher appears to have reshared that calls Kirk a racist, a sexist and more. It goes on to say empathy won’t be extended for people like that.
Another teacher made two posts about Kirk’s death that insinuate his murder was the result of his own beliefs about guns.
The district says educators are expected to exercise sound judgement and professionalism in and outside the classroom.
The Cobb County Association of Educators is sending a notice to its members about the district’s social media policy.
