Coweta Co. elementary school principal arrested, charged with shoplifting

NEWNAN, Ga. — The Coweta County Sheriff’s Office said an elementary school principal was caught shoplifting at a Newnan department store.

An arrest report for the incident says the woman, Letitia Jordan Crosby of Newnan, tried to take jewelry, clothing and decorations totaling a value of about $1,010 from the Kohls department store.

A spokesperson for Coweta County Schools said Tuesday that Crosby was placed on administrative leave from her position as principal of Thomas Crossroads Elementary when they were informed of her arrest.

“Our school system’s focus at this time is on supporting the students and staff at Thomas Crossroads Elementary School,” the spokesperson said in the statement.

The theft by shoplifting charge was reported by a member of Kohl’s loss prevention staff, according to the report. It occurred Jan. 4, according to a statement from the staff.

Details from the arrest report said Crosby was caught on surveillance footage walking around the store with a cart full of “different items like she was shopping.” The loss prevention staff said “she walked around the store with the buggy multiple times until she finally just walked out the front door with the buggy without paying.”

The arrest report says this was caught on surveillance footage and documented in a report by law enforcement staff.

According to the report, it started in the seasonal section of the shop, where Crosby is accused of taking “one Valentine’s Day Heart and Cherries T-shirt, one Valentine’s Day need a nap t-shirt, one Valentine’s Day love XOXO hearts t-shirt, one Grandma Claus T-shirt, one Lilo & Stitch feeling festive pullover sweater, two Celebrate Together Valentine’s Day wood heart wreaths, two boxes of Valentine’s Day heart bowl fillers and one Merry Christmas door banner.”

After, the report says Crosby went to the women’s department “and selected one brown Nine West Rib button-up sweater, one Fuschia Nine West Dolman sweater, one blue Vera Wang short fem dress and two teal Vera Wang V-neck tiered dress,” as well as various jewelry items. Then, she went to the jewelry department, took seven Sonoma earring cards, eight Nine West earring cards, one Lauren Conrad earring card and eight Primrose earring cards, putting them in her shopping cart, then picked up two Hallmark gift bags and went into the fitting rooms.

The report says after that, she spent almost half an hour in the room before leaving with her shopping cart, hanging the two Vera Wang V-neck dresses on the clearance rack and left the store, still while with the cart.

“The suspect failed to pay for the selected items in the shopping cart, some of which were clearly visible,” as she left the store, then loaded the items into her vehicle.

The report also said there’d been a previous incident where Crosby was “deterred from shoplifting” on Nov. 18 and $291.41 of merchandise was recovered. That incident was not reported to the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office at the time.
