DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A massive fire at the Georgetown of Atlanta Condos in DeKalb County displaced 15 adults and four children.
The fire broke out on Sunday afternoon, with flames reportedly shooting about 50 feet into the sky, according to witnesses.
Firefighters arrived at the building on Colonial Way to find multiple units engulfed in flames, and they spent the evening putting out hotspots.
“I looked out my door and there were flames flickering,” resident Tori Davis told Channel 2’s Cory James. “The wind did not help.”
Lorena Salguero, another resident, described how her boyfriend injured his foot while escaping, and their dog required medical treatment. “The firefighters were giving him oxygen, like with a pet mask. So thankfully they were there to help,” she said.

The building affected by the fire did not have sprinklers in any of the eight units, according to the HOA president, Thom York.
Davis, who had lived there for two years, lost one of her cats named “Mustard” in the fire.
“I have Ketchup, but Mustard is gone. But that’s OK, she does not have to suffer anymore,” she said.
Firefighters initially received reports of people trapped inside, but fortunately, everyone managed to escape safely. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The American Red Cross is assisting those displaced by the fire, helping them find temporary housing and other necessities.
