DeKalb County firefighter dies in line of duty

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — DeKalb County Fire Rescue has confirmed a firefighter has died in connection to a fire on a movie production company’s property.

DeKalb County told Channel 2’s Courtney Francisco he was injured at a warehouse fire on South Stone Mountain Lithonia Road.

His name is expected to be released Tuesday morning.

DeKalb County Fire Rescue confirmed the death, saying in a statement, “DeKalb County Fire Rescue mourns the loss of a beloved veteran of our department, who passed away after dedicating 21 years of service. He succumbed to injuries sustained in a commercial structure fire.”

“We ask everyone to pray for his family and for the members of Dekalb County Fire Rescue as we navigate this difficult time,” said Dionna Smith, spokesperson for DeKalb County CEO.

At the same time, droves of firefighters were showing up at Grady Memorial Hospital. Fellow first responders were starting to find out a firefighter was seriously hurt while responding to the warehouse fire, and they were showing one another support.

A Channel 2 Action News camera captured loved ones embracing one another outside the emergency department.

Minutes later, family and DeKalb County officials confirmed the firefighter hurt could not be saved. Motorcycles and fire trucks escorted his family away from the hospital.

A procession of firefighters and county agencies left Grady Memorial Hospital Monday night.

Back at the spot were the fire happened, investigators from the county and state gathered evidence well into the night.

They did not confirm what caused the fire that killed the rescuer.

The production company that owns the property is called Digital Thunderdome.
