DeKalb County man says his neighbor’s dog keeps attacking his pets

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A DeKalb County man is on edge and living in fear after he says his neighbor’s dog attacked his dog.

Derrick Hairston, Sr., is concerned that if the dog, a Cane Corso, isn’t removed, it will continue to pose a danger to his pets, or even people.

Hairston says when he saw a gash on his two-year-old dog, Spot, last Friday, he knew instantly what happened.

“She was attacked on my property,” Hairston told Channel 2’s Cory James.

He says Spot was attacked by his neighbor’s dog.

“He’s breeding Cane Corsos, which is a huge dog,” he said.

Hairston says his neighbor’s dog has a history of being aggressive towards his animals.

“This has happened so many times. This is the fourth event,” Hairston said. “Killed one dog that I had for about six years. I kinda swept that under the rug.”

Text messages between Hairston and his neighbor show conversations about some of those attacks.

In one from last September, Hairston says his neighbor asked, “Is it bad? Which one did it?” And then said, “It won’t happen again.”

Two months later, Hairston sent a text saying, “Your dog has attacked my dog again.”

James tried to call the neighbor and sent a text message asking for an interview, but has not received a response.

Hairston says he’s questioning his safety after seeing recent stories on Channel 2 Action News about a Cane Corso that killed a woman in Troup County in July and a pack of Cane Corsos that allegedly killed a small dog in Buckhead last month.

“It’s super frustrating, you know. I’m 69 years old. I need that dog off this property. That dog could kill me,” he said. “He’s vicious.”

Hairston says he reached out to DeKalb County Animal Services multiple times, hoping they would pick up his neighbor’s dog, but they have not responded to him.

James also contacted DeKalb County Animal Services for a comment, but did not receive a response.
