DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Wiring, char marks, and a melted grill are part of what is left over after a DeKalb County family’s car caught on fire in the middle of the night, right in their own driveway.
Channel 2’s Eryn Rogers spoke with the Stone Mountain family on Thursday, as well as their neighbor, who pounded on their front door to wake them up.
“I seen smoke in my room, so I got up in a panic and I was running out,” homeowner Erica Porter told Rogers.
“I walk down and see that their car in front of their garage was on fire,” neighbor Erin Ellington said.
“It was really devastating to sit and watch my car in flames,” Porter said about watching her Volvo XC90 burn.

“(It was) in good condition, no issues, no lights. I was up on all of my inspections,” Porter said.
Rogers contacted the DeKalb County Fire Department, who confirmed to her that their investigation ruled out arson, but they aren’t sure what caused the fire.
She also contacted Volvo. A spokesperson sent Rogers a statement that said, in part:
“At Volvo Car USA, safety is our highest priority, and we take the safety and well-being of our customers seriously. We are aware of the fire involving a Volvo XC90 in Georgia and can confirm it was not part of any recalls.”
“How can we prevent it from happening again, like really bring some attention to this because this is something that shouldn’t take place,” Porter said.
While Porter would like some answers, she and her neighbors are glad this wasn’t worse.
“If you see something, do something, say something, just protect your people because we have to be a community around here,” Ellington said.
Volvo told Rogers that they are sending someone to inspect Porter’s car.
