Witnesses told Channel 2’s Tyisha Fernandes the suspect must have known there was a detour, because he took it with ease.

The officer didn’t make the turn, crashing into the dump truck. Despite the severity of the damage to his vehicle, the officer is expected to make a full recovery from moderate injuries.

Dekalb County police are still looking for the white car they say was stolen out of Rockdale County with Florida plates.

They say two armed robbery suspects were in the car wearing masks Tuesday night into Wednesday morning when police ended up chasing the driver.

“I was coming home from work, and there was a car that was driving erratically up there probably 20 min prior to the crash,” said witness Anna Hoyland. “It was spinning out in the intersection up there.”

When she saw the same car speed by her house on Glenwood Avenue, she said an officer was right behind him and crashed when the suspect took a left at the detour on Terry Mill Road.

“Some other guy who was following the chase pulled into our driveway, and he was like, ‘Did they get the white car?’” Hoyland said. “And at that point I didn’t know it was the same white car that was spinning out up there, but it was.”

Just a couple hours before the crash, nearby Greater Piney Grove Baptist Church had an event with hundreds of people.

When the DeKalb Watershed project is done, church leaders are teaming up with the CDC and local farmers to build a community garden there.

They said they’re praying for the injured officer, and praying for everyone’s safety, as police chases continue to scare many people in the community.

“We heard that the officer spun out of control and hit a dump truck, so we’re really concerned about police chases to be honest with you,” Miranda Mack McKencie said.
