DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A fire heavily damaged a dozen apartments at the Huntington Station Apartments in DeKalb County, Chamblee, late Wednesday night.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported as residents evacuated the building.

“When I walked out on my deck, it was like heat just hit me like a force,” George Fannon, a neighbor who witnessed the fire, told Channel 2’s Bryan Mims.

The fire broke out in the apartment complex off New Haven Drive, causing significant structural damage, including a collapsed roof and wall.

Firefighters from DeKalb County Fire Rescue responded quickly to the scene, ensuring the safety of all residents and preventing the fire from spreading to nearby buildings.

Fannon captured footage of the fire on his phone.

“There were people that were trying to run back into the building while it was on fire, trying to get some stuff, their pets and stuff. But fire had to pull some of those people back,” he said.

“It’s always safe to let us kind of do our job. Don’t put yourselves in harm’s way,” said Battalion Chief Steve Vickery, DeKalb County Fire Rescue.

The fire started in the apartment next to Julio Cuervo’s, who lived on the second floor. His apartment was left in ruins, with furniture and belongings destroyed.

Residents returned to the site to collect their belongings, reflecting on their losses but expressing gratitude that everyone was safe.

Firefighters had to briefly retreat when the roof and a wall of the building collapsed about 20 minutes after their arrival. Despite the destruction, the response from fire crews prevented the flames from spreading to other buildings in the complex.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
