Those across metro Atlanta seek warmth as temperatures plummet

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — As temperatures continue to drop Sunday evening, metro Atlanta residents are preparing, some seeking shelter while others focus on keeping their homes warm and costs low.

Channel 2 Action News This Morning will have more on the bitter cold moving into the area.

Channel 2’s Brittany Kleinpeter was at the Frontline response headquarters less than half an hour before it began welcoming people.

Frontline Response opened its headquarters Sunday ahead of the arctic blast, welcoming guests like Stephanie Stanley, who sought relief from the wind and worry.

“I’ve had to sleep out in the cold numerous nights, not having anywhere to go,” Stanley said.

In partnership with DeKalb County, Frontline Response opened five warming shelters across the area. National CEO Terry Tucker said the sites offer a safe place to rest, hot meals, and case management resources.

“Not only are we bringing people in for the night, but we’re also going to be keeping them 24 hours a day for the next three days,” said Tucker.

Will Butler, Georgia executive director for Frontline Response, said the timing couldn’t be worse with many families already struggling amid the government shutdown and SNAP benefits in limbo.

“When you have compounded issues on top of one another, it just exacerbates the conditions,” Butler said.

As winter settles in, homeowners are also taking steps to lock in warmth. Georgia Power spokesperson Chad Nation said efficiency is key to staying warm and saving money.

“Keep your thermostat around 68 degrees, and take advantage of natural sunlight during the day,” Nation advised.

Georgia Power also recommends cleaning air filters regularly to help heating systems run efficiently, ensuring vents are clear of furniture or drapes for proper airflow, and properly insulating attics and walls to keep warm air in and cold air out.

In addition to DeKalb County shelters, other metro Atlanta counties are opening warming centers over the next several days.
