Crash involving dump truck shuts down I-20 eastbound

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. — A crash involving five vehicles, including a dump truck, on Interstate 20 eastbound temporarily shut down all lanes Monday afternoon.

GSP said two people were taken to Cobb WellStar for treatment, and a 10-year-old child was transported to Scottish Rite Hospital. Officials did not provide information on the condition of anyone involved.

The collision happened before the Thornton Road exit. Georgia State Patrol said the dump truck was going westbound when it had a front tire failure, causing it to hit one vehicle.

It then drove across the median and into the eastbound lane, hitting three more vehicles and causing one to turn over.

A witness to the crash spoke to Channel 2’s Courtney Francisco on Channel 2 Action News at 5.

Greg Cook said one of his friends and her son were hit by the dump truck.

“We were head of it slightly as it came through across the median,” he said. “Our friends were a couple cars behind and got caught in it.”

“Everyone else is OK as far as we know, at least alive. It was scary,” he added.

Cook said he stayed behind to look for his friend’s dog, which had run away after the crash. They found the dog a short time later.

According to the Georgia Department of Transportation’s 511 mapping service, the crash happened around 2:05 p.m. Lanes were reopened just before 5 p.m.
