‘My son was murdered’: Mother demands justice 6 months after son’s body found during traffic stop

DOUGLAS COUNTY, gA. — The mother of Malachi Mitchell, a 21-year-old man shot and killed during a firearm sale in January, is demanding answers as the case remains under review by Douglas County authorities.

“My son was murdered,” Kenya Mitchell said.

She, along with supporters, held a rally outside the Douglas County Courthouse, seeking justice and transparency in her son’s death. District Attorney Dalia Racine has indicated that her review of the case may conclude within the next 30 days.

“I am here for answers,” said Kenya Mitchell, expressing frustration over the lack of communication from authorities.

It was Jan. 29 when deputies stopped a driver for traffic violations near the Home Depot on Thornton Road near I-20 and found Malachi Mitchell’s body in the car. No charges have been filed against the driver.

State Rep. Silvia Wafer Baker said she received a message from the sheriff’s office saying, “This is under investigation. We’re not going to be influenced by public pressure.”

Malachi Mitchell was shot and killed during a firearm sale, and deputies reported a struggle between Mitchell and the buyer inside the buyer’s car, which led to shots being fired.

The buyer drove off with Mitchell’s body in the passenger seat, and deputies stopped the car during a traffic stop, believing the buyer acted in self-defense.

Kenya Mitchell has not heard from Douglas County authorities or law enforcement in over six months, aside from being told the case is under review.

Kenya Mitchell expressed disbelief upon hearing from Jones that the D.A.’s office expects to have an answer on how to proceed within the next 30 days.

“How convenient, Douglas County. It’ll be wrapped up in 30 days but I haven’t heard from them in six months,” she said.

Kenya Mitchell vows to continue her fight for justice, emphasizing the need for transparency and urgency in the investigation into her son’s death.
