GoFundMe campaign started for employees of beloved Forsyth Co. diner destroyed by fire

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A community is coming together to help the staff of a beloved bagel shop after a fire ripped through the building over the weekend.

BB’s Bagels and Breakfast happened to be located near a fire station, but that didn’t help much in this case.

A spokesperson for the Forsyth County Fire Department said a 911 caller alerted them to the fire and when the flames hit a natural gas line, the fire got worse.

“It’s a pillar in this community more than anything,” customer Charles Hirsch told Channel 2′s Tyisha Fernandes. “People come here and it’s like that old show Cheers. When you come here they know your name.”

Customers are heartbroken over Sunday’s fire at BB’s on McFarland Parkway in Forsyth County.

Fred Paprin takes a 30-mile drive every couple of months just to buy the New York-style bagels at the restaurant, where they’re still made the traditional way - kettle-boiling hand-rolled dough.

“I just drove up here today and I’m like, ‘Oh, I’m gonna have a treat for the next couple of months,” he said. “These folks, it’s the original. Hand rolled. There are no bagels south of the Mason Dixon, I can assure you. I’ve tried 20 places.”

The owners aren’t sure what started the fire.

They’ve been overwhelmed by all of the support from the community.

They’re using the money raised from a GoFundMe campaign to help their staff.

“They’ve stuck by us and our concern was how are they gonna get through. How are they gonna pay their bills next week, next month?” Owner Anna Siino said. “Are they gonna be able to feed their families for the next couple of days?”
