Body recovered in Lake Lanier: Drowning victim remembered as a ‘go-getter,’ provider for his family

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Family and friends are remembering a man who drowned in Lake Lanier.

Game wardens found the body of 27-year-old Ramon Diaz-Soria on Sunday night.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the Forsyth County Fire EMS dive team recovered his body just after 7:30 p.m.

He disappeared while out swimming to celebrate a friend’s birthday Saturday near Vanns Tavern Park, his family said.

Melanie Meza, a family friend, told Channel 2’s Brittany Kleinpeter that he was loved by everyone he met.

“I guess they were stopping at an island or something, and he fell into the water within seconds,” Meza said. “They tried to get him and after five minutes, there was no luck.”

Diaz-Soria’s family says he was known as a leader in the Hispanic community and a caregiver for his family.

Witnesses say he was wearing a lifejacket, but it wasn’t secured.

Meza said Diaz leaves behind one sister and his parents.

“He amazed me, how he did everything. And right now it is such a big toll on his sister,” Meza said.
