Georgia school resource officer hit by vehicle while directing traffic

GILMER COUNTY, Ga. — Authorities are investigating after a school resource officer was hit by a vehicle Tuesday afternoon, according to the Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident happened on Highway 5 South near Legion Road and Bobcat Trail in Ellijay.

Authorities said a Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office SRO deputy was directing traffic when he was hit by a vehicle.

The incident resulted in the closure of the roadway at Legion Road and Bobcat Trail.

Just after 5 p.m., Sheriff Stacy Nicholson shared more information on the deputy’s condition.

“Sheriff Nicholson has spoken with the deputy’s wife, as well as communicated with the deputy through her, and we can confirm the deputy has non-life-threatening injuries. He is in a significant amount of pain and is being admitted for further evaluation and care. We appreciate the community’s concern. Please continue to keep our deputy and his family in your thoughts,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

His age and identity were not released.
