CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — An Aidan Birr 23-yard field goal with 14 seconds remaining completed the comeback for Georgia Tech on Saturday, giving them the 36-34 road win.
Yellow Jackets (9-1, 6-1 ACC) quarterback Haynes King finished 26-34 with 371 yards and a touchdown passing, adding another 53 yards on the ground.
No. 16 Georgia Tech needed 19 fourth quarter points to overtake Boston College’s (1-10, 0-7) 28-17 lead entering the final frame.
Malachi Hosley led the way rushing for the Yellow Jackets with 107 yards and a TD on 15 carries.
Senior Malik Rutherford was the top receiver with five catches for 121 yards and a TD.
The comeback kept the Yellow Jackets tied for first place in the ACC, with a showdown at home against No. 23 Pittsburgh coming up next Saturday. A win puts them in the league championship game.
“It’s good to come out with a win. Always happy to get a win no matter how the win occurs or who it’s against,” Georgia Tech coach Brent Key said. “We have a chance next week to play for a championship, to play in the game, and that’s all you can ask for.”
After taking the lead in the fourth quarter, the Yellow Jackets fell behind again 34-33 when Turbo Richard scored on a 43-yard run up the middle with 2:05 remaining. But the Eagles failed on the 2-point try.
King then marched Georgia Tech 69 yards in 13 plays before Birr’s winning kick.
“We had to go down and win it,” King said. “We did the job and we executed plays. Got it on the perimeter a little bit and continued to move the ball when we needed to and convert on third down.”
Golden Eagles QB Dylan Lonergan finished with 362 yards and 2 TDs on 26-40 throws. His final pass into the end zone was batted down by a Georgia Tech defender as time expired at Alumni Stadium.
The Associated Press contributed to the report.
