HENRY COUNTY, Ga. — It’s an ongoing debate - whether babies should be allowed to remain in restaurants when they get a little loud.
Millions of people are watching the video that captured two customers arguing over it in McDonough.
Thousands weighed in when a customer told a Henry County mother to leave if she couldn’t keep her infant quiet. Channel 2’s Tom Jones speaks to the mother in the viral video.
Vee Whitaker had brought her 8-month-old daughter Montana to lunch at Paris Banh Mi.
Montana wanted to exercise her vocal cords, and that didn’t sit well with one customer. What happened next has people on social media voicing their opinions.
“So, this gentleman here is telling me to tell my 8-month-old here to stop screaming,” Whitaker says in the video.
The customer told Whitaker that Montana’s screaming was hurting his sensitive ears and they need to be respectful and leave.
“She’s a child, sir,” Whitaker says. “It’s not me. I didn’t do anything.”
Whitaker told me she and her baby have a right to eat out like everyone else.
“I’m telling him, ‘Like, you can leave. I don’t have to leave. If you have a problem with it then you can leave,’” she told Channel 2.
A manager eventually came over and the customer left.
Whitaker shared the encounter on social media, and on one post it has nearly 800,000 likes and nearly 50,000 comments.
The encounter has gotten tens of thousands of comments since it was shared on social media.
One person said a baby screaming is annoying. Another said, “I don’t want to hear a baby screaming.”
Many others said it’s a public place for everybody. That’s the sentiment people near the restaurant shared Thursday.
“No. She’s a baby. You have no control over that. It’s a baby,” Laquisha Burton said.
Whitaker continues to believe her baby has a right to dine out like anyone else.
She says the customer eventually apologized, and she applauded the manager for how he handled this incident.
“No parent, no kid should feel like they don’t belong because of another customer,” she said.
