Responders carry people from flooding homes in Covington

NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. — Covington police, firefighters and EMS responders helped rescue dozens of residents from a flooded apartment complex in Newton County Sunday morning.

“Some of the complex encountered three, almost four feet deep of water rising up to door levels. The residents couldn’t get out of their homes, and it was unknown at the time, if the flooding would continue,” Covington Police Lt. Daniel Digby told Channel 2’s Tom Regan.

Digby said the apartments on Nixon Circle flooded after heavy rains because the water in a nearby lake spilled over its banks into creeks and into the apartments. At least 45 apartments were evacuated.

“The apartments may have anywhere from three to five individuals. And some were able to get out on their own. Some needed assistance from police and fire personnel. Some were even carried out through the flood waters,” said Lt. Digby.

One of residents told to evacuate was Danny Cobb, who lives with his mother.

“I thought about my mom because she is 70 years old. My mom don’t swim. She’s got dementia. I said, ‘Let me get my mom to my sister’s house,’” said Cobb.

No was injured. Management of the apartment complex said there was little flooding damage.
