Paulding County deputy shot, suspect dead after welfare check turns into a shootout

PAULDING COUNTY, Ga. — A welfare check at a home ended with Paulding County deputies involved in a shootout with a suspect.

The suspect died and one deputy was rushed to the hospital after he was shot.

The deputy, identified as 24-year-old Brice Mattick, was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, but is expected to recover.

The shooting happened Thursday morning in the area of Redbud Run and Sweetgum Trace in the Brooke Valley neighborhood.

Channel 2’s Brittany Kleinpeter learned deputies responded to the home initially for a welfare check.

The suspect’s mother called her work and reported that her son was acting erratically. Her work then called the sheriff’s office to check on her.

When deputies got to the home, the sheriff’s office said the woman’s son started firing.

Deputies returned fire and killed the suspect, whose identity has not been released.

The sheriff’s office says Mattick is awake and talking and waiting for tests.

Mattick has spent four years with the sheriff’s office and has spent two of those years on the road.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed it has been called out to the scene.

We have a reporter and photographer heading out to the scene. LIVE updates on the Free WSB-TV News app and Channel 2 Action News at Noon.
