ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. — Fire alarms echoed as firefighters pulled burning semis out of a charred Conyers mechanic shop Thursday night.
“I hope everyone in there is safe,” a neighbor said
Families who live next door and drivers on Interstate 20 stopped when they saw black smoke billowing into the air during rush hour.
“The pollution in the air, smoky,” the neighbor said.
It was coming from the parts and services garage of MHC Kenworth, a company that specializes in heavy and medium-duty truck sales and services on Iris Drive.
Firefighters have not confirmed what sparked the flames, but it happened while the shop was open, and employees were working.
Kenworth has not responded to requests to comment.
A man whose semi was inside told Channel 2’s Courtney Francisco that he was watching his business burn down, too.
He will have to get a new truck before he can drive and make money again.
Families said the smoke and roadblocks bring back memories of the Biolab fire that leaked chemicals in the air and caused evacuation orders less than a year ago.
