‘Armed and dangerous’ inmate escapes from Grady Memorial Hospital, crashes stolen SUV

ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. — A Rockdale County inmate is on the run after deputies say he escaped from Grady Memorial Hospital, stole a SUV and crashed it in Atlanta.

The Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office says Timothy Shane should be considered “armed and dangerous.”

Investigators believe there was a confirmed sighting of Shane near Atlanta’s Little Five Points neighborhood, Channel 2’s Candace McCowan learned. They say he is now wearing a red hoodie and tan pants.

Rockdale County deputies have used a parking lot in the neighborhood as their staging area for much of the day.

Lt. Billy Burrell told Channel 2 Action News that Shane went to Grady Memorial Hospital for a medical evaluation on Sunday night after a suicide attempt. He later escaped around 1:20 a.m. Monday. Burrell said investigators are still working to find out how Shane escaped.

A photo captured Shane getting away while wearing a hospital gown.

After his escape, the sheriff’s office said Shane stole a SUV at Piedmont Ave and Auburn Ave, but crashed it less than a mile away on Ivan Allen Jr. Blvd. The car’s owner says a Glock handgun was stolen.

Officers and deputies are still looking for Shane, who is about 5 feet, 9 inches tall with a buzzed haircut. They said he was last seen wearing a red sweatshirt and tan pants.

Shane is a convicted felon and was arrested by Conyers police last week. He’s accused of leading them on a chase going 123 mph through a residential neighborhood at one point.

Grady says its policy is that “inmates under treatment at the hospital is that the custodial law enforcement agency must have one-to-one oversight of them at all times”

According to the sheriff’s office, he has a history of fleeing, felony drug and weapons charges.

If you see Shane, do not approach him. Call 911 or the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office at 770-278-8000.
