Severe weather rolls through metro Atlanta, north Georgia, leaving downed trees and power lines

Severe Weather Team 2 tracked a line of thunderstorms that moved through the Channel 2 viewing area earlier Tuesday evening.

The severe thunderstorm warnings, which included several metro Atlanta counties, have been allowed to expire.

But the line of storms have left damage in its wake, including a E-911 center in Carroll County that was struck by lightning.

There have been some reports of trees down and power outages in the Channel 2 viewing area, in particular in the northwest part of the state.

More than 23,000 Georgia Power customers are without power, as are nearly 20,000 Georgia EMA customers as of 9:50 p.m.

9:30 p.m.

Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office reports West Wylie Bridge Road is completely shut down at Old Hickory Road because of a tree entangled with power lines down across the roadway.

9:22 p.m.

Hall County’s blocked roads have cleared up. The sheriff’s office reports a couple of roads are still impassable: 3300 block of Chestatee Road, 4900 block of Hopewell Church Road and Shirley Road at Mount Vernon Road.

9 p.m.

The Carroll County E-911 center was struck by lightning, temporarily affecting their systems, Carroll County Sheriff’s Office reported. All 911 calls are currently being routed through Haralson County dispatch, so all Carroll County 911 calls will still be answered. Emergency crews and Carroll County staff are on scene assessing the damage and working to restore full service as quickly as possible.

8:55 p.m.

In Forsyth County, tree and wires are reported down at Marketplace Blvd and Turner Road, according to the sheriff’s office. Find alternate routes.

8:10 p.m.

Cherokee County reported that Hickory Flat Highway is closed in the curve between Hickory Road and East Cherokee Drive because a downed tree brought power lines down with it.

Hall County Sheriff’s Office reports downed trees across roadways at 5500 block of Jim Crow Road, 3800 block of Honeysuckle Road, 3300 block of Chestatee Road and 3300 block of Ladd Drive blocking one lane.

Tree and lines are across the roadway in Hall County at 4900 block of Hopewell Church Road and Shirley Road at Mount Vernon Road.

7:30 p.m.

White County Public Safety’s Don Strength reports a tree on a house in Cleveland. The Cleveland Fire Department are en route.

A viewer reported severe weather blew in, and strong winds blew their heavy smoker in Jefferson, in Jackson County.

There are more damage reports coming from Cedartown and Rockmart in Polk County: at 873 East Point Road, Kassi Lane, Beauregard Street on Lowery Road, all in Cedartown; and at 2463 Cedartown Highway in Rockmart, according to Hendrix.

6:50 p.m.

Polk County EMA’s Landon Hendrix reports that lighting has struck a house at Parker Roberts Road. Trees are also down on Cut Log Road and North College Drive and on Woodall in Cedartown.

Also in Rockmart, there are reports of power lines down at Wheeler Ford Road, Clarkwood and Braswell Mountain Road and at 281 Lower Road. There’s a vehicle trapped by power lines on Lowery Road.

Polk County is also reporting that a downed tree trapped two people, but they weren’t hurt.

Cherokee County’s Emergency Manager Rebecah Green is reporting lots of trees down.

Pickens County EM Director Robby Westbrook is reporting trees and wires down one mile south of Jasper and six miles west of Jasper.

Trees and wires are also down in Nelson just north of the Pickens and Cherokee County line.

Gilmer County Emergency Manager Aaron Freeman says 1,900 are out of power with probable multiple lines down in the county.
