He sustained a broken leg and other serious injuries.

“When she struck him, he hit the top of the car and hit the windshield, causing great injury…but he’s recovering,” said Dr. Cedric Alexander, Public Safety Director.

The crash happened just after 7 a.m. Wood was collecting something in the roadway when he was hit.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and was not charged, although the Georgia State Patrol continues to investigate the crash.

A nearby resident, whose brother is also a police officer who survived being hit by a driver, expressed empathy for Wood’s family, acknowledging the risks officers face daily.

“For them to lay their life on a daily, to make the community safe for us…it’s priceless,” she said.

Wood is currently alert and has been reunited with his parents at Grady Memorial Hospital, where he will undergo surgery for his injuries.
