Sandy Springs officer, suspect taken to hospital after standoff

NORTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — A suspect surrendered in a Sandy Springs neighborhood after police say shots were fired at officers.

One of the officers was injured in the shooting but is expected to be OK, a spokesperson told Channel 2 Investigative Reporter Sophia Choi.

Officers and SWAT blocked off the area of Carroll Manor Drive and North River Parkway.

After hours of negotiation, the man gave up and lied down at the front door before SWAT put him in handcuffs.

Police confirmed that the suspect was taken to the hospital to be evaluated. It was unclear if he was injured by gunfire or something else that required care.

“I heard him say that he couldn’t crawl anymore and that he didn’t want to die,” said neighbor Doug Hill.

The officer, who was grazed in the thumb by a bullet, was also taken to the hospital.

Officers responded to the home after getting a call about someone firing a gun.

“When they went inside the home, they were met with gunfire,” said Sandy Springs Police Officer Jarrell Greene. “Our officer was hit. Officers retreated.”

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed it has been called to investigate.
