Rain, storms will continue into Monday with colder temps to follow

ATLANTA — The risk for flooding is going to be going up through the overnight hours as rain and storms continue to move through North Georgia.

The rain will eventually taper off in the midafternoon and finally clear out completely by late Monday night.

“Ultimately, some cooler and drier air will be coming in behind this very slow-moving system,” Severe Weather Team 2 Chief Meteorologist Brad Nitz said.

After all the rain finally moves out, you’re going to a big change in the temperature, with highs only in the mid-to-high 60s to start out the week.

Here’s a look at how Sunday’s storms unfolded:

7:50 p.m. The tornado watch has expired in our area. A second round of heavy rain and embedded storms is moving though metro Atlanta now from the SW.

6:16 p.m. The Master said that due to the weather, patron gates will not open as scheduled for Monday’s practice round. They will have an update on Monday morning.

5:10 p.m. Our crews sent in this video from Coweta County of a tree on a home there:

4:52 p.m. Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Lamar and Upson County until 5:30 p.m.

4:27 p.m. Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Upson County until 5:00 p.m.

4:11 p.m. The Tornado Watch has been extended east, but some of the west metro area has been canceled from the watch.

3:33 p.m. Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Clayton, Coweta, Fayette, Meriwether, Pike and Spalding County until 4:15pm.

3:18 p.m. Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Meriwether and Troup County until 4:00 p.m.

2:47 p.m. Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Coweta, Fayette, Meriwether, Pike, Spalding and Troup County until 3:30 p.m.

2:45 p.m. The Tornado watch has been canceled for the northern half of metro Atlanta.

2:40 p.m. Our cameras caught this flooding along Piedmont Road in Buckhead:

2:18 p.m. Severe Thunderstorm Warning issues for Meriwether and Troup County until 3:00 p.m.

1:14 p.m. A ground stop is in effect for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport due to weather.

1:00 p.m.: Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect for Clayton, DeKalb, Fayette, Fulton, Henry, Rockdale and Spalding counties until 1:45 p.m.

12:40 p.m.: Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect for Carroll, Cobb, Douglas, Fulton and Paulding counties until 1:15 p.m.

12:29 p.m.: Severe Thunderstorm Warning in effect for Carroll, Coweta, Fayette, Heard, Meriwether and Troup counties until 1:15 p.m.

11:33 a.m.: Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brian Monahan says heavy rain and storms will slowly spread across metro Atlanta over the next couple of hours and last the rest of the day.

11:12 a.m.: A Tornado Watch is in effect for metro Atlanta until 7 p.m. Severe storms with damaging winds, brief tornadoes, and flash flooding are possible.

Butts, Carroll, Chattahoochee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Fulton, Gwinnett, Harris, Heard, Henry, Lamar, Marion, Meriwether, Muscogee, Newton, Paulding, Pike, Rockdale, Spalding, Stewart, Talbot, Troup and Upson counties are included in the Tornado Watch.

7:44 a.m.: Tornado Watch in effect until 11 a.m. on Sunday. A Flood Watch is in effect through Monday evening.

  • Waves of heavy rain and storms will move across the area now through early Monday
  • Any storms will have the risk of producing damaging wind gusts and a brief spin up tornado
  • Flood watch across north Georgia 8 a.m. today through Monday evening
  • Widespread 2-4″ rainfall totals with locally 4-6″+ possible
  • Rain will gradually taper off through the day Monday
  • Sharply colder Tuesday and Wednesday with lows Wednesday morning in the 30s and low 40s
